Photographer: Laird Mark Ehlert

Laird Mark Ehlert
Biography
Laird was born and raised in central Wisconsin, but has lived in Jersey City for the past 25 years. Laird says that, "While I largely failed to find a self-supporting career in art & design, I have continued to create in my spare time, as so many artists do. I have produced an extensive amount of graphic design projects, mostly for not-for-profit groups, and have been a constant photographer over the years- I almost always have a camera with me. Twenty years ago I started my own greeting card company, Maid In The Shade. Many of the cards incorporate my own photographs." Laird is currently working on a book of informal portraits- strangers who cross his path only once in a lifetime. Education: BS in Elementary Art Education from the University of Wisconsin; BFA in Advertising Design from Syracuse University.

Artist's Statement
I especially love photographing people, primarily because of the spiritual element inherent in a living being. A beautiful face is always nice, but capturing their soul is wonderful. I am also attracted to serenity, another way of connecting to Spirit. For the 2009 show, I depart from my portrait work to the serenity of rural Central Wisconsin. The weather creates drama like no where else in the country and the clouds are often oppressive. There can be a fine line between serenity and loneliness there.
