Gary Strickland
Biography
Born and raised in the mangrove forests of rural Florida, Gary Strickland has a strong connection with the natural world, as shown by his favorite subjects: landscapes, seascapes, and all living things, especially botanical. He began photography as a teen in the USN and it has been a lifelong passion. He retired from a 1st career as a Microbiologist, then became a GJG (graduate jeweler/gemologist)at the GIA. He creates handmade commissioned fine jewelry, and also sells his watercolors. One of his black and white photos recently won an award in the Jackson Hts. Art Club's annual exhibition.

Artist's Statement
My photography is simple. No fanciful flights of pseudo-intellectual gobbledygook are needed. I try to capture the essence of a thing and my reactions and emotions to it. What it "says" or what I wish it to say. Often this is just my awe at the overwhelming beauty of nature. Other times it's more complex, like melancholy or impermanence. Generally the image from the camera requires very little manipulation, if any, before printing. Sometimes it doesn't reflect what I felt at the time, or say what I want to say. Then it may need some enhancements with a program like Photoshop. Other times the picture may just be the starting point for a digital art piece that might be unrecognizable as having started as a photograph. I see no reason to constrain myself to the interpretation of the capturing device. After all, do you imagine that "Halfdome" looked that way when Ansel Adams pulled the negative from the camera?
